    Gold trades in troy ounces. We pull the live spot figure hourly and divide it by 31.103 to get a price per gram.

  2. Multiply by purity

    14k is 58.3% gold. The rest is copper, silver and zinc, which carry no meaningful resale value.

What the price does not include

Three things routinely surprise people selling gold for the first time. None of them are anybody trying to cheat you.

Stones are deducted

You are paid for metal. A 6 gram ring with a stone may only be 4 grams of gold, and the stone itself is usually treated as worthless unless it is certificated.

Craftsmanship is not recovered

Design and labour made up most of the retail price and vanish at the melting point. This is why a chain that cost four figures scraps for a fraction of it.

Plating counts for nothing

Gold plated and gold filled items hold a tiny fraction of the gold their appearance suggests. Check for a GF or GP stamp before you weigh anything.
