585 rather than 14k
Continental European jewellery is marked by fineness in parts per thousand rather than by karat. 585 is 14k, 750 is 18k, 375 is 9k. A piece stamped 585 is exactly the same purity as one stamped 14K, and worth exactly the same per gram.
Germany, Italy and Poland all use 585 widely, and it is the most common gold purity in several central European markets.
VAT and second hand gold
Investment gold bullion is VAT exempt across the EU. Jewellery is not, so a retail purchase includes VAT that you will never recover when you sell. This is a large part of why the resale gap on jewellery feels so steep in Europe.
Selling your own second hand jewellery as a private individual does not normally create a VAT charge.

Is gold VAT free in Europe?
