14k gold price per pennyweight

A pennyweight is a little over one and a half grams, so any price quoted per dwt is about 55% higher than the same price quoted per gram. Two buyers can offer you identical money while one advertises a number that looks far more generous than the other.

Convert everything to one unit before comparing. The arithmetic is simple enough to do on a phone: a dwt price divided by 1.555 gives the price per gram, and a gram price multiplied by 1.555 gives the price per pennyweight.

Ask which unit the scale is set to as well. Many jewellers' scales switch between grams, pennyweight and troy ounces at the press of a button, and a counter weighing in dwt while quoting a figure you assumed was per gram is a confusion worth heading off. It is a fair and ordinary question.

The pennyweight is literally that: the weight of a medieval English silver penny, defined as one 240th of a tower pound. The abbreviation dwt uses d for denarius, the Roman coin the English penny descended from, which is also why pre decimal British pennies were written d.

It survives in the troy system at twenty pennyweight to the troy ounce. Note that a troy pound is twelve troy ounces rather than sixteen, a distinction that matters only if someone quotes you in pounds, which almost nobody does.

Pennyweight survives in the North American scrap gold trade and in dentistry, and almost nowhere else. Outside the US you will be quoted in grams as a matter of course, and a dwt quote in Europe would be unusual enough to query.

Dental gold is worth knowing about if you have any. Dental alloys are typically far higher karat than jewellery, often 16k to 20k equivalent, and many contain palladium and platinum alongside the gold. A small envelope of old crowns is routinely worth more than people expect, and it is priced per pennyweight by the refiners who handle it.

One pennyweight of 14k weighs 1.555 grams and is 58.33% gold, so it contains about 0.907 grams of fine gold. A troy ounce is twenty of them, holding roughly 18.14 grams of fine gold.

For a sense of scale, a typical wedding band of 4 to 7 grams is between two and a half and four and a half pennyweight. Most single pieces of jewellery land in low single digit dwt, which is part of why the unit feels awkward to anyone outside the trade.
